My desk is small, but I want to use an external keyboard.
People have different reasons for this. It might be to prevent repetitive strain injury, or because they prefer a specific typing feel.
Whatever the reason, when you try to use an external keyboard in a limited space, you naturally end up stacking the keyboard on top of your MacBook.
There's one problem that arises from this usage.
Touch ID cannot be used.
When the keyboard is stacked, your finger can't reach the Touch ID sensor.
Every time authentication was required, I would type in my password.
It was a hassle, but I managed that way for a long time.
The situation changed after passkey authentication became widespread.
Passwords alone were deemed insufficient,
and two-factor authentication via email or SMS became the norm.
You'd type your password, and then enter an authentication code.
While this extra step started appearing everywhere, Touch ID would complete it in one go.
At this point, it became difficult to keep avoiding it with just passwords.
I started having to slide the keyboard, press Touch ID, and then slide the keyboard back every time.
I looked into commercially available keyboard covers.
These are plate-shaped covers designed to place an external keyboard on top of a MacBook's keyboard. While there were a few options, I couldn't find one that had an opening for Touch ID.
There were also none that supported the angle adjustment feet of an HHKB.
So, I decided to make one myself.
You can directly press Touch ID even with the external keyboard placed on top.
The keyboard also sits steadily, even with the HHKB's feet extended.
It weighs 83g. The design ensures that the USB-C ports and MagSafe charging port are not blocked.
It is compatible with the MacBook Pro 16-inch (M1 and later). I have confirmed its compatibility with an HHKB and RealForce RC1.
This product is not compatible with 13-inch or 14-inch MacBook Pro models (currently under development).
Due to the nature of the material, please avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or high temperatures. There have been no issues with normal indoor use.
